About the course

In recent years, Copperplate calligraphy has been adopted as an umbrella term that is used to describe a group of shaded pointed pen calligraphy styles that has similar characteristics. The key differences between the scripts stem from reasons like origin, key historical events, tools used and purpose. Generally, Copperplate scripts are often favored when legibility for the art piece/project is important. As such, we often see calligraphy (in Copperplate style) being adopted in wedding invites, envelope addressing or in formal correspondence for modern day applications. A large portion of calligraphy works we are being engaged to write for formal invitations/events, requires proficiency in this script.

Students attending this course should have some basic understanding of calligraphy basic strokes and should know how to form lowercase letters from a-z (You do not have to create perfectlowercase letters at this stage)

In our 6-weeks extension course for Copperplate Calligraphy, we will build on your existing knowledge on general pointed pen calligraphy experience and study the letterforms in much greater detail than a basic introduction class will cover. We will also be introducing our Skeleton and Structure analysis study to help you learn how to analyse forms better. Our script style is primarily influenced by British English Roundhand and is also our signature script used for many of our commission works done for several luxury brands over the years. Several of the companies we work regularly for writing commissions to date: Chanel, Christian Dior Couture, Hermès, The Hour Glass, Patek Phillippe, Montblanc, Club21 and many more.

What to expect

• Students will gain access to an online classroom for all class content during the above study period.

• Instructor’s class demonstration notes will be scanned and uploaded on the online classroom for students to download and revise.

• All sessions are recorded. Students can watch class recordings for as long as they have access to our online classroom page.

• Class worksheets, calligraphy guide sheets, recommended materials list, calligraphy exemplar and additional readings/PDFs will be uploaded onto the online classroom and will be available for downloads.

• Optional Class assignments will be given after each class session. Students will receive personal feedback for any submitted works.

• Registered students will continue to gain access to our online classroom page for an additional 1-month after the end of our last class date.
